Marahau Water Taxis – A Local Story
For nearly three decades, Mārahau Water Taxis has been part of countless adventures in Abel Tasman National Park. From a single boat behind a campground to one of the largest water taxi fleets in the region, the company has helped visitors explore this stunning coastal paradise.
In October 2025, Mārahau Water Taxis officially merged under the Abel Tasman AquaTaxi banner, bringing together two well-loved local brands into one streamlined Abel Tasman water taxi experience. This article looks back at the history of Mārahau Water Taxis, their growth over the years, and what the merger means for travellers today.
In the Beginning…
In 1997, Peter and Sandra Alborn were looking for a change. After selling up in Waipukurau, one of the businesses they explored was taking over the lease on the Marahau Beach Camp, at the entrance to Abel Tasman National Park.
According to Sandra, Peter looked around the camping ground and then noticed an old water taxi out the back. Having always loved boats, that was all it took, the decision was made! Mārahau Water Taxis was born.
Growth and Expansion
The business grew quickly. The original camp shop and single boat soon proved too small, and in 2001 the Alborns purchased a neighbouring house, transforming it into a bright, spacious shop, booking office, and waterfront café.
With friendly personal service and great organisation, Mārahau Water Taxis expanded its fleet to four boats, becoming a key player in Abel Tasman National Park transport.
In May 2012, the Alborn family purchased Abel Tasman AquaTaxi from Ngāi Tahu Tourism. While Mārahau Water Taxis continued to operate under its own brand, the acquisition expanded their fleet to 15 boats, over half of the water taxi capacity in the park. With a focus on creating a great customer experience, the business continued to thrive, sharing their favourite spots with visitors from near and far.
The Merger
From 1997 to 2012, the company operated exclusively under the Mārahau Water Taxis brand. After purchasing AquaTaxi, operations were unified while keeping two separate brands, websites, and booking channels.
While Mārahau Water Taxis has always held sentimental value for the Alborn family, the decision was made in 2025 to retire the brand.
On 1 October 2025, all boats officially came together under the Abel Tasman AquaTaxi banner. For travellers, this means one website, one brand, and one easy booking system. The same great water taxi services continue, with departures from Marahau and other key points in the park.
