Marahau Water Taxis - Water taxi transport in the Abel Tasman National Park

For 28 years Marahau Water Taxis provided water transportation services in the Abel Tasman National Park, all year round. On the 1st October 2025 Marhau Water Taxis merged with Abel Tasman AquaTaxi providing the same friendly faces, the same local knowledge, and even more streamlined booking, all under AquaTaxi.

Marahau Water Taxis was the only water transport company operating in the Abel Tasman to have its own general store, camping ground, sea kayaking base and cafe/beer garden right on site. The company’s operating base was the closest to the Marahau boat-ramp, the water-based departure point for the Abel Tasman. The blue taxis could be seen transporting people up and down the Abel Tasman coastline, all summer long.

The Abel Tasman National Park contains a great number of walk sections, trip alternatives and epic locations. Because we like to keep things simple our trips and scheduled sailings are incredibly easy to understand and book.

After being something of a side-business to the Marahau Beach Camp, Peter and Sandra Alborn acquired Marahau Water Taxis in 1997 as part of the purchase of the lease on the Marahau Beach Camp. Over the next decade they grew the business to include four water taxis and a decent chunk of the Abel Tasman water transport market.

In May 2012 the Alborn family purchased Abel Tasman AquaTaxi from Ngai Tahu Tourism. While Marahau Water Taxis has continued to operate under its own unique brand and identity, the acquisition of AquaTaxi provided the Alborns with a total of 15 boats and over half of the Abel Tasman National Park water taxi capacity.

In October 2025 the blue boats were put to rest and Marahau Water Taxis  merged with Abel Tasman AquaTaxi to bring it’s customer a more streamlined booking service.
